Who we Are

Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organization that works to end hunger and malnutrition around the world. The organization was founded in 1998 as Stop Hunger Now and was later renamed Rise Against Hunger in 2017.

Rise Against Hunger’s mission is to provide food and aid to communities in need, and to empower those communities to become self-sufficient in the long term. The organization operates in more than 75 countries, and works with partners on the ground to distribute meals and provide resources such as education and healthcare.

Rise Against Hunger Africa, the African subsidiary was established in South Africa in 2009 with the goal of addressing hunger and malnutrition in Africa.

Rise Against Hunger Africa primarily engages volunteers in meal packaging events across South Africa, where groups come together to assemble nutritious meals that are then distributed to Early Childhood Development centres and communities in need. These events are a way for individuals and businesses to make a tangible impact in the fight against hunger in Africa.

Rise Against Hunger Africa operates their own distribution network alongside partnering with local organisations to distribute meals, facilitate sustainable farming projects and coordinating disaster relief activities.

OUR CORE VALUES

Nutrition

Rise Against Hunger Africa offers a social investment opportunity to provide fully balanced nutritional meals for children necessary for their holistic development.

Education

Our ECD Connect Programme focuses primarily  on providing nutritious meals for children between the ages of 1 to 6 years old. This is critical for them during their developmental years. This programme is also an outcomes based programme with solid measurable results. We assist unregistered Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs) to improve their facilities and teacher training in order for them to meet Department of Basic Education standards and obtain registration. This is achieved through the savings created by receiving donated meals from Rise Against Hunger Africa.

Sustainability

Staying true to our mission and vision, we set-up vegetable gardens within the communities we work. These gardens provide job opportunities, training facilities, nutritious vegetables for our ECDs and create a platform to empower women to start their own micro “vegetable market” business.

Rise Against Hunger Africa implements and manages these projects end to end to ensure the success of the garden. Comprehensive and consistent Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) is also conducted by the RAH team.

Once the gardens reach their production potential, around 50% of the produce is donated to the ECDs we support in the community, and the other portion is sold via our “Woman’s Social Enterprise Development” programme. This provides the project sustainability and ultimately longevity.
